Some of Rockefeller building |
Moving into day 4 after the cruddiest night's sleep, we had a great day today.
Very hot again, humid too. The sun doesn't burn the same though.
Kathy and I ventured out to the supermarket and scored some great bread among other essentials.
Then the day consisted of Blue line subway downtown and off to do "Top of the Rock" with our NY Pass - this also entitled us to a tour of the Rockefeller centre. Lindsay our guide was fabulous.
The tour took us out and around and through the 22 buildings, hearing of their construction, development and of the riches of the Rockefeller empire.
Lots of art and sculptures in and around the buildings. The Rockefeller centre's major tenant in NBC, and it houses studios of NBC Today show and many others. We saw some famous people from The Today Show, but I didn't know them, Hoda, Cathie Lee, some bloke? Ellen is taping her season premiere in the Rockefeller plaza, so there is lots going on regarding the setup.
It was interesting that Junior and his wife, Abby Rockefeller were responsible for much of what we saw, Abby was responsible for the art and it seems Junior was quite the prude. Taking offence at some art and sculpture, to the point that he wouldn't enter the building through certain entryways, because of nude sculptures above the door. He even destroyed the artwork of a significant artist Diego...as he took offence to the inclusion of Stalin and communism.

Really amazing Tromp L'oeil on the ceiling, the image shifted as you walked underneath it. A bit like the eyes of the Mona Lisa. |
Then it was time to go UP the tower to the Top of The Rock. Great views, better than ESB, despite the haze, which is due to the humidity according to one of the security folk. There were many fewer people and better vantage points, not behind glass or fences.

Happy little vegemites - Kathy, Sandra and I. |
After lunch at La Cucina, we divided with Sandra and Kathy off to tackle The NY Skyride (which they found a bit ordinary), Museum of Sex and Hop on Hop Off bus for Kathy and home for an early night.
Lyn and I were opting for Radio City tour, so we arranged our tickets for the 3.15 tour, then had a little time to look around again. Managed to find the BOSE store for Lyn, who scored free replacement cord for her headphones. Ducked into the lego store.

Radio City. |
The Radio City tour was excellent, another great guide around an amazing entertainment venue. Once a picture theatre that was nearly demolished following the arrival of television and loss of patronage. It was saved at last minute by the NYC Heritage Committee.

Radio City is famous for its Christmas show and the falling soldiers. |
They were hosting rehearsals of America's Got Talent Semi-Finals. We saw The Professional Regurgitator in rehearsal. The Radio Hall has all been restored and kept original, they had just replaced the carpet a few weeks ago.
Then Lyn and I had plans to come home and get changed for theatre, however not enough time - so I purchase a shirt at GAP and we has some Wafles (yes that's the way they spelt it) and Dinges at Bryant Park and a chance to rest our weary legs, before heading for Times Square for our first Broadway show - Neverland, with Anthony Warlow and Matthew Morrison from Glee in the lead. It was fantastic, laughed and cried.

The weather was hot, hot, hot outside, but the Lunt-Fontaine Theatre was cold. NB: take a scarf/wrap next time. Saw Lleyton Hewitt waiting with the kids, we reckon Bec was in the loo, after the child.
Then out into the warmth of Times Square , this place is abuzz, looks spectacular at night. We sucked it in for a while before FINALLY conquering the subway home - got it right the first time. Home by about 11.05.
Fabulous day, now for bed up early for Central Park cycle tour at 8.30am.
